School streets

The City of Edinburgh Council has introduced the School Streets initiative at 12 primary schools across the City, some of which have been in operation since 2015. This initiative prohibits most vehicular traffic moving within a zone set out by flashing signage, like that used for part time 20mph speed limits, during specified time periods before and after school. Permits are issued to residents to maintain access, Blue Badge holders and other permitted vehicles, such as emergency services, are exempt from the prohibition. These restrictions are enforceable by Police Scotland. 

By limiting vehicle access at the school gates, it eases congestion, improves air quality and encourages active travel to and from school.

Below is a table showing the schools that have School Streets operating, the streets in which vehicular traffic is prohibited and the times the restriction is in place. 

Abbeyhill Primary School

Abbey Street included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:20am to 9:05am and 3:00pm to 3:40pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:05am and 12:10pm to 12:40pm Friday

Carrickknowe Primary School

Tyler’s Acre Gardens northwards to  Tyler’s Acre Road. Tyler’s Acre Avenue to the west kerbline of Lampacre Road are included in the prohibition..

TImes of restrictions 08:00 to 09:30 and 14:00 to 16:00 Monday to Thursday inclusive and 08:00 to 09:30 and 11:00 to 13:00 Fridays.

Clermiston Primary School

Parkgrove Place and Parkgrove Terrace (between Parkgrove Street and Parkgrove Road) included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:20am to 9:00am and 2:50pm to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:00am and 12:10pm to 12:40pm Friday

Colinton Primary School

Redford Place, Redford Neuk, Redford Bank (from Redford Grove westward) and Redford Gardens (from Redford Grove westward) included in prohibition.

Times of restrictions: 8:15am to 9:00am and 2:40pm to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:15am to 9:00am and 12:00pm to 12:35pm Friday

Corstorphine Primary School

Manse Street, Oswald Terrace, Featherhall Road and Featherhall Terrace are all included in the prohibition.

Times of Restriction 08:00 to 09:30 and 14:00 to 16:00 Monday to Thursday inclusive and 08:00 to 09:30 and 11:00 to 13:00 Fridays.

Cramond Primary School

Fair-a-Far Shot, Cramond Bank, Cramond Crescent and Cramond Terrace included in prohibition.

Times of restrictions: 8:20am to 9:00am and 2:45pm to 3:35pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:00am and 12:10pm to 12:40pm Friday

Duddingston Primary School

Hamilton Gardens, Hamilton Grove and Hamilton Drive West included in prohibition.

Times of restrictions: 8:20am to 8:55am and 2:45pm to 3:40pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 8.55am and 11:55am to 12:30pm Friday

Gilmerton Primary School

The Spinney, Hyvot Bank Avenue, Hyvot Loan (between Hyvot Mill Drive and Moredun Dykes Road) and Moredun Dykes Road (between Hyvot Gardens and Gilmerton Road) included in prohibition.

Times of restrictions: 8:20am to 8:55am and 2:35pm to 3:20pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 8:55am and 12:00pm to 12:35pm Friday included in prohibition.

Leith Primary School

St. Andrew Place included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:20am to 9:00am and 2:50pm to 3:35pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:00am and 11:50am to 12:40pm Friday

Sciennes Primary School

Livingstone Place and Sciennes Road (between Sylvan Place and Tantallon Place) included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:35am to 9:00am and 2:40pm to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:35am to 9:00am and 11:55am to 12:20pm Friday

St Johns RC Primary School

Hamilton Drive, Hamilton Park and Hamilton Terrace included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:20am to 9:00am and 2:35pm to 3:40pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:00am and 11:30am to 12:15pm Friday

St Mary's (Leith) RC Primary School

Links Gardens (numbers 11 to 27 inclusive plus school) and Links Gardens Lane included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:35am to 9:05am and 2:35pm to 3:25pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:30am to 9:00am and 12:05pm to 12:40pm Friday

St Peter's RC Primary School

Falcon Gardens, Falcon Avenue (from Falcon Road westwards) and Falcon Road included in prohibition.

Times of restriction: 8:20am to 9:00am and 2:50pm to 3:45pm Monday to Thursday and; 8:20am to 9:00am and 11:55am to 12:35pm Friday

Towerbank Primary School

Figgate Street, Whin's Place, Aithison's Place, Shrub Mount, Beach Lane, Figgate Bank and Wilson's Park included in prohibition.
